First, some serious discussion. Let's talk about music for a change. What is good music - what is bad? What is pleasant music, what is disturbing music? What is music all about? Some of these questions you'll get an answer to with the texts I'm planning on making soon. This is part one, and it answers the question What is music all about?
First of all, music to me is a gift, a thing that's bigger than life itself. Wikipedia (which isn't the best source though) says something like this about the definition of music: "Greek philosophers and medieval theorists defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies, and vertically as harmonies. Music theory, within this realm, is studied with the presupposition that music is orderly and often pleasant to hear." This is close to what the scientific perspective concerning this subject is, but there is more. See, in the end music is all about interpretation. The reason why I cannot feel the same things as you while listening to the Beatles is because we have different views and different experiences in life. Even you would have the same opinion about them as I do, it's not possible for you to have the same feelings than me while listening to them.
Often people take different musical tastes as a solution to why we cannot have the same favorite bands and like the same kind of music. Even I use this excuse. However, the truth is, that there is no such thing as a musical taste. When people hear a song, they try to adapt the song with their life, how they feel etc. If you for example like hard rock, and you hear a song by that genre, you probably like it because you have listened to hard rock before. The other way round, if you don't like hard rock, but you hear a hard rock song and like it, it's because there is something in the song that fits into your head at the moment. There are exceptions, but usually this is the case - and no, this is not only a theory of mine.
Then about where goes the limit of sound and music. In today's world, everything that has one sound and rhythm in it is considered music (see ex. acapella, guitar-only instrumentals). However, from my perspective, music is something that has multiple elements joined together and which has been meant to be music. In most cases the thing is clear - you have guitars, drums, vocals... and there's no argue that it's not music as long as you can play. However, like many people during the 20th century discovered, music isn't always necessarily pleasant. So, a garage band playing next to your house with no skills can also be music... Just let them have that.
Then, to my music. Here is a short demo piece I recorded yesterday morning. It currently has no name. I know that the guitar could use some tuning, but still, check it out and let me know what you think. It's really heavy and sounds promising to me. The story behind it is simple - I saw a dream about me inventing this great song, but when I woke up, I couldn't remember the song that well anymore. However, it inspired me to grab the guitar and jam. So, while I was jamming there 9 AM in the morning, I came up with this great riff. It was a riff where I played the strings G, H and E - the highest strings - with standard tuning. So, as it sounded pretty much like Winter, I decided to try it with E, A and D, the lower strings. And it sounded even greater. So, I continued jamming, and came up with another riff similar to this one I had invented earlier. Soon I was extremely excited. I got the idea to put full distortion on my amp, and it came heavy as a 100 kg rock. I changed the riffs a little by taking off the 'E' string, and it came even better. The outcome is this.
My latest lyrical demo, currently titled 'Lie Down', looks like this at the moment:
Solace I sense inside myself
Hushing the toil from my bed
For a moment I feel not lonely
As I step into imaginary
Sun waits for my lead
Pain struggles to get to me
Collapsing my earthly body of sin
as I fly eternally
Don’t force your soul just wait on
Let your burdens take the fall
Dream inside you will be reborn
So lie down
Lie down to sense the dawn
Prayer speaking out his heart
dreaming to find stars in the dark
Erasing his hollow humanity
receiving the immortality
With a thought I manipulate
without a soul my existence would be a waste
The shadowy play is crossing it’s fate
the night is rising finding itself late
Feel free to review it.
Then about my week... well, the 3 days I spent in school were quite normal and decent, nothing new, nothing special. I'm a bit stressed about a couple of events coming during the next 2 or 3 weeks, but I'm glad there's only 20 days of my 7th grade left. After that, I can finally rest and concentrate on my music, and concentrate on my music alone. Thursday and Friday were holiday for all students due the First of May. So, extended weekend came in the right spot...
That's pretty much it... Woah this came out to be along post lol. Well, anyways, I'll post something new either tonight or tomorrow.
"This time, this time, I'm sorry..."
